Wow. Will you look at that. It’s July now. July. 2013 is half over. Halfway done. I’ve set some ambitious goals for the latter half of the year. Perhaps I should also take some time to take stock of what I’ve done so far. Let’s see how it breaks down… [click to continue…]

In part 1, I talked about some of the wonderful people, both old friends and new friends, who make Balticon such an amazing event for me. In part 2, I went over a couple of the highlights of the first half of the weekend. Now, in Part 3, we’re going to look at the rest of the weekend. [click to continue…]

I just posted my schedule and already some things are changing! Most of them are small changes, adding or subtracting a few names from the schedule, filling in some gaps, identifying a moderator. That sort of thing. But there are some bigger things in store, too. We’ve added a new reading with author Justin Macumber on Sunday night! If you’re not making it to Balticon this year, you’re really missing out! [click to continue…]

Last week I wrote about my life being on Pause, but now I’m back writing again. What gives? Well, this week things are getting to be more under control, and last week’s post was really explaining the past two week’s absence…
My wife has been more mobile this week. She’s even started walking about in the house using just a cane. It takes her a bit to tighten up the muscles, but she’s doing it. She’s also noted that some things that caused pain before, she can now do without pain. This is a really good sign. She is getting more self-sufficient, and that means that I’m getting more time to catch up on things. I’ve started on mundane things like dishes and laundry, but I’ve also been able to squeeze out some time to start writing again. My last post was actually written on my phone while I was riding to work. Now I’m getting a chance to actually sit down at the computer and begin doing some work.

… someone else.
Oh, well. While it would have been nice to get a job offer right out of the gate, it would also have been pushing the odds a bit too far. But I’m not really discouraged. I submitted my audition on ACX last Tuesday, and on Thursday, I got contacted by two different authors inquiring about my availability. That was a little unexpected. Of course, these were just inquiries, not actual job offers… [click to continue…]

I must say, right at this moment, I feel like the Magic Spreadsheet works wonders. I started using the Magic Spreadsheet on February 1st. Now, as I’m writing this on the evening of February 12th, I’ve racked up over twelve thousand words written! And what’s more, I broke my streak last Wednesday when I had an event in the evening that kept me from stealing any keyboard time. And that’s not counting the words in this post. That’s over a thousand words a day! More than just racking up a lot of words, I finished the first draft of my short story for The Way of the Gun Anthology. It came in a bit long. Almost 14 thousand words, but I think I’ve got a pretty good story. Now I just need to figure out what to write next…

My how quickly things can change. Two weeks ago I talked about creating a new account with ACX and plans to make some money from narrating audiobooks later this year. Now it would seem that sooner would be better than later. We got some news at my day job this past week. It seems my work is being negatively impacted by the economy and they are going to have to make some cuts. They’re not planning on letting any people go, but in order to make the cuts they need by the end of the year, they’re going to be putting employees on furlough in the latter half of the year. For the third and fourth quarters of the fiscal year, every employee will be required to take two days of furlough in each pay period. That’s a 20% pay cut… [click to continue…]

Some weeks are full of accomplishment, and some weeks feel like nothing gets done. This past week felt like I couldn’t get anything accomplished. That wasn’t true, of course, but that is the way it felt. Visiting friends occupied a good chunk of the weekend; something I really haven’t done in a while. And then there was the very tempting talk of adding new projects to the docket… [click to continue…]

After being on the fence about it for many months, this past week I finally broke down and created a profile on ACX. What is ACX, you say? And well you might ask. ACX is the Audiobook Creation Exchange. Audible.com created ACX to promote the creation of digital spoken word content. This makes a lot of sense because digital spoken word content is what Audible sells. They need to get that content from somewhere, and ACX is part of making that happen. ACX creates a marketplace where rights holders, aka publishers, authors, and other empowered agents, can find narrators, studios, and producers looking for work. Here’s how it works… [click to continue…]

January is a time to look forward to the rest of the year. One of the things we look forward to each year, is Balticon! For those of you who aren’t familiar, Balticon is the Maryland Regional Science Fiction Convention put on each year by the Baltimore Science Fiction Society, or BSFS. Balticon is held each year on Memorial Day weekend in Hunt Valley, Maryland. So, in January, we start making plans… [click to continue…]
