Time once again for something from the Wayback Machine. I’m actually going to try to make this a regular #FlashbackFriday event. We’ll just have to see how successful I am at keeping things scheduled.
Anywho, This Friday we are turning the clock back to May 5, 2011 to revisit an all crew episode of The Galley Table. In episode thirty-five, we’re talking about gods and their place in your story. We talk about some of our favorite deific figures in stories and how they are effectively, and non-effectively used. No matter your personal faith, we still feel that there is a place for god-like figures in literature.

Halfway there! Yes, that’s right! This episode marks the halfway point of the Balticon 46 wrap up. This is another Special Episode of my podcast The Shrinking Man Project. This time it’s The Shrinking Man Project Live! with special guests, Veronica Giguere, Starla Huchton, Justin Macumber, and substituting for Tee Morris, Lauren “Scribe” Harris. This started as a revisiting of The Shrinking Man Project Live from Balticon 45, but ended up a little more like an episode of The Fit-2-Write podcast, a podcast that Lauren, Justin, and Tee started to talk about their own weight loss challenges. The topic for this panel was Inspiration, both for creative endeavors such as writing, and for starting and keeping with your weight loss program. We didn’t have a huge audience this year, but I think we had some really good discussion.

The Shrinking Man Project
This past week my focus has been on ACX. I’ve been scouting out opportunities for some paying voice work gigs. I’ve noticed some interesting things while perusing through the lists of available properties looking for a narrator. Most noticeable among them: an awful lot of the work waiting for a male narrator are romance novels. I even looked at a few of them. After all, if it sells, it sells! I must say, right at this moment, I feel like the Magic Spreadsheet works wonders. I started using the Magic Spreadsheet on February 1st. Now, as I’m writing this on the evening of February 12th, I’ve racked up over twelve thousand words written! And what’s more, I broke my streak last Wednesday when I had an event in the evening that kept me from stealing any keyboard time. And that’s not counting the words in this post. That’s over a thousand words a day! More than just racking up a lot of words, I finished the first draft of my short story for The Way of the Gun Anthology. It came in a bit long. Almost 14 thousand words, but I think I’ve got a pretty good story. Now I just need to figure out what to write next…

Time for the next installment of the Balticon 46 wrap up. If you’ve been with us since the beginning of the Balticon 46 Wrap-up, you’ll remember the video we started out with, where I was getting ready for a panel. Well, this is that panel: Just Dandy: The Importance of Accessories in Steampunk. This was a very different panel for me, as it was a part of the Costuming panel at Balticon. How did I get on a costuming Panel? Shooting my mouth off on Twitter. Pavlina, last year’s head of the Costuming track, was asking for ideas for ideas for panels. I tweeted the title for this panel, and Pavlina jumped on it. Sensing that I had gotten myself in over my head, I demurred that I would only do it if Jared Axelrod, that modern epitome of Dandism, was part of the panel. Jared instantly replied, “I’m there.”
I thought it was going to be just Jared and I giving a talk on the subject, but it turned into a panel discussion, for which I was grateful. The Panel consisted of Elektra Hammond, Janine K. Spendlove, Jared Axelrod, Rebecca K. Davis, and myself. The panel and the audience were both beautifully attired. I know someone took video, but I don’t have access to it. However, Nuchtchas was kind enough to allow me to post some pictures that she took during the panel.

My how quickly things can change. Two weeks ago I talked about creating a new account with ACX and plans to make some money from narrating audiobooks later this year. Now it would seem that sooner would be better than later. We got some news at my day job this past week. It seems my work is being negatively impacted by the economy and they are going to have to make some cuts. They’re not planning on letting any people go, but in order to make the cuts they need by the end of the year, they’re going to be putting employees on furlough in the latter half of the year. For the third and fourth quarters of the fiscal year, every employee will be required to take two days of furlough in each pay period. That’s a 20% pay cut… [click to continue…]
