Writing

For forty-six days I found time each day to write something. At first, I wrote 250 words each day. Actually, most days I well surpassed 250 words, although there were a few days when I just barely ticked over 250. After a month, I leveled up and raised the target to 300 words a day. I still made regular progress. And then, on the forty-seventh day, after a long day at work, I came home, climbed into bed, and collapsed. I slept through until the next day. And my writing chain was broken. [click to continue…]

Today, I have the opportunity to do a very special post in the Pimpin’ Your Friends category. The friend in question is the lovely and talented Starla Huchton. Starla is not only a friend, she’s my cover artist. She did the cover for the e-book of my short story “Welcome to Paradox” and she will be doing the cover for my steampunk novel The Perils of Prague. She’s got a very nice business as a freelance graphic designer over at Designed by Starla, doing book covers for independent authors and publishers. Today, Starla is releasing a very special cover, and I have the privilege of bringing that cover to you. [click to continue…]

They say that brevity is the soul of wit. Well, after last week’s post, perhaps I should try to be witty. Who knows, it might work.

Last week I also promised that I would speak of more writerly things, and that is a promise that I can keep. I have kept with the habit of writing every day and have leveled up to writing 300 words a day. This past week I’ve actually been more likely to write over 500 words a day, which is a little surprising… [click to continue…]

A roil of thoughts

I’ve been writing a lot this past week. And it hasn’t been my usual style of writing. Current events have gotten my brain churning in a number of different threads. It is a little difficult to sift through this pot of metaphorical spaghetti and pick out a theme to talk about for a #WriterWednesday update. So, instead I’m going to talk a little about what is in the pot. [click to continue…]

Things have been slowly returning to normal, or at least what passes for it around here. My wife has done much better with her recovery, and that has given me time to get back into my writing.  So, at the end of March, I returned to the Magic Spreadsheet and began a new writing chain. This has led to some interesting developments. [click to continue…]

Writing again

in Novels

Last week I wrote about my life being on Pause, but now I’m back writing again. What gives? Well, this week things are getting to be more under control, and last week’s post was really explaining the past two week’s absence…

My wife has been more mobile this week. She’s even started walking about in the house using just a cane. It takes her a bit to tighten up the muscles, but she’s doing it. She’s also noted that some things that caused pain before, she can now do without pain. This is a really good sign. She is getting more self-sufficient, and that means that I’m getting more time to catch up on things. I’ve started on mundane things like dishes and laundry, but I’ve also been able to squeeze out some time to start writing again. My last post was actually written on my phone while I was riding to work. Now I’m getting a chance to actually sit down at the computer and begin doing some work.

Finally!

Yes, this is a very, very late #WriterWednesday post. In fact, it may not even be Wednesday anymore by the time it goes up. But I think I’ve got some very good reasons for the delay… and some very good news for folks who’ve been waiting for new releases from me. All in all, it has been a very, very busy week. I must say, right at this moment, I feel like the Magic Spreadsheet works wonders. I started using the Magic Spreadsheet on February 1st. Now, as I’m writing this on the evening of February 12th, I’ve racked up over twelve thousand words written! And what’s more, I broke my streak last Wednesday when I had an event in the evening that kept me from stealing any keyboard time. And that’s not counting the words in this post. That’s over a thousand words a day! More than just racking up a lot of words, I finished the first draft of my short story for The Way of the Gun Anthology. It came in a bit long. Almost 14 thousand words, but I think I’ve got a pretty good story. Now I just need to figure out what to write next…

The Next Big Thing

by Doc Coleman on February 1, 2013 · 4 comments

in Novels, WIP

P.C. Haring tagged me on his blog with this writing meme – The Next Big Thing. This meme shows off a little about the next Work in Process we writers are working on. It is an opportunity to give readers a little sneak peek and some inside information on the next new manuscript.

First, the Rules:

1. Mention the person who tagged you at the beginning of your post (done)
2. Answer the ten questions about your current WIP (work in progress) and/or new release on your blog (see below).
3. Tag five other writers/bloggers and add their links so we can hop over and meet them. They’re supposed to answer the questions within the week. (Personally, I hate tagging people.)

Now the Questions… [click to continue…]

January is a time to look forward to the rest of the year. One of the things we look forward to each year, is Balticon! For those of you who aren’t familiar, Balticon is the Maryland Regional Science Fiction Convention put on each year by the Baltimore Science Fiction Society, or BSFS. Balticon is held each year on Memorial Day weekend in Hunt Valley, Maryland. So, in January, we start making plans… [click to continue…]
