Behind the mic

It feels like I’ve been able to get a lot done this past week. I’ve got a contract for a new voicework project, although I’ve not been given leave to identify the project yet. And that has gotten me back behind the mic again for something more than the Balticon 47 Wrap up. This weekend I recorded auditions for three new Audio Drama. Well, actually I think one of them is a continuing project that was in need of new cast members. [click to continue…]

Time once more for another episode of the Balticon 47 Wrap up. We’re continuing with the theme of narration and voice acting again this week by looking at the art of Podcast Editing. This is the art of transforming raw audio into podcast gold. Or, how not to sound like you’re working from a home studio, even though you are. This panel was moderated by Chris Snelgrove, and features panelists Hugh O’Donnell, P.C. Haring, P.G. Holyfield, and Chris Lester.

A moment of joy…

The Alpha Read for The Perils of Prague continues. The pace is a bit slow so far, but I have two readers who have given me good, consistent feedback. Once they’ve gotten about half-way through the book, I’ll begin working on the third draft and shortly after that the Beta Read should begin. I have to admit that I have been tickled with some of the comments I’ve got from the Alpha Readers… [click to continue…]

It seems a very strange thing to talk about money in a #WriterWednesday post. It seems even stranger to think that I’m talking about me receiving money. Let’s be realistic for a moment here: for all the talk about improving one’s craft and telling stories, and expressing the ideas in your head, the real reason that we write and keep writing is to make money. Ben Bova said that the only reason for writing was the expectation of being paid for it. To a lessor or a greater extent, this is true. Writing is work. Hard work. Even when we give it away, we expect to be paid for it eventually. [click to continue…]

A lot can change in a year, and yet, a year can speed by you so fast, leaving so much undone.

This time last year, I was looking back at what I had done since my last birthday, and making plans for how I was going to move forward over the next year. Looking at it now, it sure seems like a lot of the things I had planned out last year didn’t end up happening. At least, the way things developed certainly was not what I originally planned. Whether that will turn out to be for good or for ill, time will tell. Perhaps I’ll know next year. [click to continue…]

Sometimes, it seems like no one tells me anything. In 2012, I narrated a story for the Protecting Project Pulp podcast. Yes, they seem fond of alliteration. Anywho, I recorded The Hand of the Mandarin Quong by Sax Rohmer early in the year and sent them the raw audio, which I thought was what we had agreed upon. After several months of not hearing back from them, I contacted them to ask when I could expect the story to go live. It turns out that they hadn’t scheduled it because they didn’t have anyone to edit it. They had expected me to send them edited audio, not raw. [click to continue…]

Wow. Will you look at that. It’s July now. July. 2013 is half over. Halfway done. I’ve set some ambitious goals for the latter half of the year. Perhaps I should also take some time to take stock of what I’ve done so far. Let’s see how it breaks down… [click to continue…]

When I started Swimming Cat Studios, I named it because I was having to do a lot on my own, teaching myself as I went. I had some resources to steer me in the right direction, and a few friends who could give me suggestions, but I pretty much had to do it on my own. It is the only way to learn new skills. Over the years I’ve tried a lot of new things, had some success, and some failures, and learned a few things.

One of the things I’ve learned is that there are some things you can’t do for yourself.

And that is why I’m asking you if you’d be willing to help me out. [click to continue…]

Time to bring Back from Balticon to an end. This is part 4, the Final Installment. (cue dramatic music) Time to take a look at Memorial Day Monday. A day to do more than franticly pack up your hotel room and say teary good-byes to friends old and new in the lobby (although that happens too). It is a day to take some time to remember those men and women who gave their all to establish and defend America, and be grateful for the things that their sacrifice has brought us. It’s also the last day of con; there are still panels going on, and some of the coolest stuff is saved for last. [click to continue…]
