Steampunk

Wow. Will you look at that. It’s July now. July. 2013 is half over. Halfway done. I’ve set some ambitious goals for the latter half of the year. Perhaps I should also take some time to take stock of what I’ve done so far. Let’s see how it breaks down… [click to continue…]

After only a week, I’d like to thank everyone who has offered their help towards getting The Perils of Prague ready for publication, especially considering the contact form I used last week didn’t work as expected. I’ve been contacted by eight different people so far who have voiced their willingness lend my project a hand. Some are fellow authors, who are willing to Beta read for me in exchange for having me Beta read their work. A couple are editors who are willing to offer their services if we can come to a compensation agreement that fits their available time and needs. This is exciting for me, but I still have to realize that things can fall through, and I still need a lot of help. I’ve been trying to organize the responses I’ve gotten,  and get in contact with each of them. If you’d like to help out, it still isn’t too late! Just drop me an e-mail, and let me know how you’re willing to help, and what kind of compensation you’d like to have for your services. [click to continue…]

When I started Swimming Cat Studios, I named it because I was having to do a lot on my own, teaching myself as I went. I had some resources to steer me in the right direction, and a few friends who could give me suggestions, but I pretty much had to do it on my own. It is the only way to learn new skills. Over the years I’ve tried a lot of new things, had some success, and some failures, and learned a few things.

One of the things I’ve learned is that there are some things you can’t do for yourself.

And that is why I’m asking you if you’d be willing to help me out. [click to continue…]

In part 1, I talked about some of the wonderful people, both old friends and new friends, who make Balticon such an amazing event for me. In part 2, I went over a couple of the highlights of the first half of the weekend. Now, in Part 3, we’re going to look at the rest of the weekend. [click to continue…]

In the previous installment, I talked about the wonderful people who filled my Balticon Weekend. I wasn’t able to mention everyone who made the weekend a memorable event, but I tried to address as many as I could. I probably should address some of the folks I left out, but instead, I want to move on to some of the more memorable events of the weekend that made it the incredibly special experience that it was. I won’t mention every panel we attended, but I would like to point out that there will be a Balticon 47 Wrap-up, and this year’s Wrap-up should feature about 20 episodes of content. I still have to get permission to make sure I can release some of the audio, and work out some deals on the release of some content. [click to continue…]

Things have been slowly returning to normal, or at least what passes for it around here. My wife has done much better with her recovery, and that has given me time to get back into my writing.  So, at the end of March, I returned to the Magic Spreadsheet and began a new writing chain. This has led to some interesting developments. [click to continue…]

RavenCon 2013

in Asides

Well, it has been a long and tiring week. A big part of the week was a trip to Richmond, Va for RavenCon. This was our first time going to RavenCon, so we weren’t quite sure what to expect. Considering my previous sci-fi convention experience was Balticon, I found RavenCon to be considerably smaller. This did have some advantages, and a few disadvantages.  [click to continue…]

Time for the next installment of the Balticon 46 wrap up. If you’ve been with us since the beginning of the Balticon 46 Wrap-up, you’ll remember the video we started out with, where I was getting ready for a panel. Well, this is that panel: Just Dandy: The Importance of Accessories in Steampunk. This was a very different panel for me, as it was a part of the Costuming panel at Balticon. How did I get on a costuming Panel? Shooting my mouth off on Twitter. Pavlina, last year’s head of the Costuming track, was asking for ideas for ideas for panels. I tweeted the title for this panel, and Pavlina jumped on it. Sensing that I had gotten myself  in over my head, I demurred that I would only do it if Jared Axelrod, that modern epitome of Dandism, was part of the panel. Jared instantly replied, “I’m there.”

I thought it was going to be just Jared and I giving a talk on the subject, but it turned into a panel discussion, for which I was grateful. The Panel consisted of Elektra Hammond, Janine K. Spendlove, Jared Axelrod, Rebecca K. Davis, and myself. The panel and the audience were both beautifully attired. I know someone took video, but I don’t have access to it. However, Nuchtchas was kind enough to allow me to post some pictures that she took during the panel.

Recorded Saturday, May 26, 20012 at 1:00 PM. Show notes below the cut.

Yes, I went there.

So…. It’s been two weeks since I’ve been able to post an update here, so I’m past due to provide you one. NaNoWriMo has ended, and while The Bright Lands still has a LOT of work to be done to it, I have to take a step back from it for a little while. If you’ve been following along with my Twitter or Facebook feeds, you may have noticed that I’ve put a fair bit of effort behind promoting the IndieGoGo fundraiser for the Way of the Gun anthology. That fundraiser has ended now, and while we didn’t make the goal we’d hoped for, enough funds were raised that Scott Roche, the instigator of this little project, has determined that there are enough funds to pay the authors. That means me. But if I’m going to get paid, I have to write the story. If you HAVEN’T been following along with the Way of the Gun anthology, let me take a little bit of time to catch you up…

If you’ve been reading along here, you’ve seen me refer to a story that I’ve been writing for Philippa Ballantine and Tee Morris’ Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences. I’ve been referring to that story up until now, by the code name “Northern Mists”. Well, no more. Today I can finally reveal the true title, because today the Ministry released Tales from the Archives, Volume 2, Episode 7, “The Cross of Columba”, written and recorded by yours truly, audio editing and sound effects by my lovely wife Keetara, scoring by Tee Morris. And to put the cherry on top, the release date is Kee and my wedding anniversary!
