in Writing

A while ago I posted about forming a local writing group, the Germantown Writer’s Guild. The GWG has been doing pretty well thus far. We’ve had over 30 people join on Meetup, and there have been a couple of meetings where we have had twelve or thirteen folks show up. There is certainly an interest for some kind of support for writers in the Germantown area. We’ve already started a weekly writer’s workshop run by one of our members and based on an MFA course she once took. Another member is running a Page One meeting for beginning writers. I am doing a monthly Writer’s Support meeting, and I’ve been asked by the other members of the Guild to host another meeting…

A monthly meeting on the craft of writing.

This makes a lot of sense. We’re writers, so naturally we want to be able to write better. That pretty much necessitates the study of the craft of writing. At this point we’re all good.

Except I don’t know how to teach it.

I can write, obviously, but it has always been something I just did. It isn’t something that I’ve formally studied, or even thought about having to present to someone else. Yes, I did the Galley Table podcast for something like 100 episodes, and I learned a lot from that. I’ve got my own general rules for writing, but those are more practical things that properly fit under Writer’s Support in my mind.

So how do I go about teaching The Craft to my fellow writers?

Well, one way is get other teachers to come in and talk to the group about various aspects of the art of writing. Even there, I feel a bit confused. I know a number of skilled writers. I’m pretty sure that if I asked, a few of them would have the time to come talk to the group, but I feel as if I need to ask the person to talk on a particular aspect. The problem is that I don’t know that I understand the aspects of writing. Not in any form that anyone else would recognize as structured writing. It is pretty much a case of asking the pantser to tech outlining.

So, if you’re a writer, and you’d like to come by Germantown some Saturday and talk to a bunch of fellow writers about some aspect of writing, please let me know when you’re available and what you’d like to talk about. In the meantime, I guess I need to figure out a curriculum. So I’ll be doing a number of craft related posts in the coming weeks. Just look for posts with the tag “The Craft”.

I guess that’s about it for today. Talk to you next time.
