Chores, floors, and batten down your doors.

Another busy week here at Swimming Cat Central. Home improvement continues to be a major theme here. With the ceiling repairs complete, out next step was to prepare the living room for the rest of the carpeting to be removed and a new subfloor put down. That meant packing up all the loose stuff that was still in the living room so that the workers could play furniture Tetris.

And then there was the washing machine… You remember the saga of the washing machine from before? Well, we finally got over that hurdle. We installed our own washer pan and our new appliances were delivered!

Ta-da! Washer and Dryer!

My one regret is that I didn’t get to see them take out the old stack unit without unstacking it. But it is so nice to have working appliances again.

Saturday we had a meeting of the Germantown Writer’s Guild. The meeting was supposed to be our Page One Group, providing advice and encouragement for new writers who are starting at page one and need advice to get started. Unfortunately, the lead for the group got sick, and I had to take over the session as the organizer of the Guild. The session became more of a writer’s support session. I asked who our newbies were, and what kinds of problems they were having with their writing. We had another great session, talking until they closed the room down around us and we had to leave. We decided that we’re going to start doing monthly Writer Support sessions. It was great fun, and the other members seemed to get a lot out of it.

This meant that Sunday we had to finish picking up every damn thing downstairs to get it ready for the workmen on Monday. Yeah, we packed up a LOT of stuff. But the work was well worth it.

On Monday they pulled out the old carpeting and laid down our new subfloor. This has already made a big difference in how the downstairs feels. It isn’t nearly as cold as it used to be. And the new subfloor looks pretty good.

Yes, the furniture is still in the way for the most part, but they did a pretty good job with the plywood subfloor.

Tuesday they came back and painted and finished off the dining room. I have to admit that it looks really sweet. Especially compared to the before picture.

Before Before After After

We still need to put the hooks for the lamp back up into the ceiling, but that can wait for a little bit.

Of course, now we’re looking at a major storm coming into the area. Perhaps another foot of snow or more. No telling when we’re going to get the carpet laid down if it does prove to be a big storm. I guess there is always next week.

Almost a third of the way through the Perils third draft. With a little luck, I’ll have it done by the end of the month. But that is a post for another day. Talk to you then!
