Twenty years ago today…

in Asides

It rained.

I stood in a disused corner of a furnace room and put on a pleated shirt, a vest, and a bow tie. I felt ridiculous putting on fine clothes in the dirtiest room in the building, with only an aging folding chair as my only piece of furniture. I pulled the pants on over my boots and fastened them about my waist. I put on my coat and smoothed the lapels. Then I had nothing to do but wait.

Twenty years ago today, I stood with my friends and family as the assembled onlookers stared at us and mumbled to each other. My stomach was a hard knot in my middle. I had gotten food poisoning two nights before and could hardly hold down anything. It complained about being empty, but it refused to obey.

Twenty years ago today, a beautiful woman in a white dress came to stand beside me. She took my hand and promised that she would always stand beside me. I promised that I would stand beside her.

And we ran for the door!

Twenty years ago, I married my wife, Keetara. We have had our ups and downs along the way. There have been tears and laughter. And tears from laughter.

It seems like an eyeblink.

Happy Anniversary, my love. Twenty years is but a whisper. Let’s keep running, and laughing, and loving.

And never stop!

Thanks. It seems like it was just a year or two ago.
