#NaNoWriMo 2012, Day 19

Another late night of writing last night. After getting home from work, I thought I was going to collapse and get some sleep, but my wife kept me up and engaged long enough to get through the post-work slump. We had dinner, and by the time we were done, I was fully awake and she was exhausted. So, while she went off to nap, I sat down to write.

The first thousand words seemed to be difficult to come by, but once I powered through those the going became easier. I kept up my mantra of “just another 250 words…” and managed to rack up just shy of 2500 words before I was ready to go to bed. Once again it was just before midnight, so I turned in for the evening and left this diary entry for the morning.

I’ve closed the gap between where I am and where I should be to about 2000 words. I don’t think I’ll be able to close that gap today, but I’d like to be able to take another 500 words off of it. Unfortunately, the reality of the situation is that I’ll probably end up falling further behind since I have to pack for a Thanksgiving visit tonight, and I’ve gone short on sleep enough that I’ll probably want to turn in early. I’ll be doing well if I can write enough words to break even tonight. I’ll probably fall further behind and end up looking to making the word count up this weekend.

And then there is the story…

Casey has agreed to the Primus’ test, and now the pieces of her life are being examined. Scenes from Casey’s life are being reviewed, but somehow they don’t look quite right to her. Things keep happening in a way that is different from what she remembers. In her mind, Casey can feel the pieces of the puzzle moving, a pattern is forming. Something has been hidden from her. Hidden away so that she can’t even look for it. What is this secret?

I think the solution I came up with for the testing will work very well. It is an unusual take on using magic that hasn’t been seen very often. I’m choosing to be a little cagy about the process because I don’t want to give away too much in the summary. I think it should be a treat for those who will get to see the finished work. But I will say that I’ve been writing a bunch of different little scenes to illustrate the testing process. More on the testing the next time I post.

So… either tonight, or tomorrow, or possibly Thursday. Will just have to see you then.

Way to go with the story. And I know that after work slump. Kicks me all the time.

The story sounds to be shaping up nicely. I like the idea of this test, and curious about the magic now. 🙂

Hope you have a great Thanksgiving, and safe travels. 🙂 I’ll probably not be around much after today. So you and your wife have a lovely Thanksgiving.

Thanks! Some days I get home and I have energy and can just start doing things, but in this area, usually the traffic will sap my energy and I need to unwind for a while to recover. Some days it just lays me out.

The scenes are shaping up nicely, but I’m beginning to wonder about my pacing. Either I’m just now getting to the end of the first third of the story, or I’m nearing the end of the first volume. If this is the first book of a series, I’m afraid my main character may be a bit too passive so far. She’s not a pushover, but she hasn’t been leading the action yet. I guess I’ll have to deal with it in revisions after I determine the scale of the story.

Have a great Thanksgiving, and I’ll see you next week.
