Pimp Your Friends

And, in what seems like a blink of an eye, another week is gone.

But it has been productive. Northern Mist went through editing in what seems like a blink of an eye. I must admit that the editing process was vaguely disappointing. I was expecting more feedback. For once I’m experiencing the desire to continue hammering at a story to polish it further. It has been a new experience. That nagging feeling that says, “I can do better.”

But production schedules will not wait for me. So I have to move forward.

Yesterday was a day for great news to come my way. Not all of the good news happened yesterday, but it was the day that word reached me on a number of things. If any of this is news to you, I’m happy to be the bearer of glad tidings.

Phoenix Rising nominated for the 2011 Goodreads Choice Awards!

All right. I admit it. I should have written this post earlier. My only excuse is the timing, seeing as this news came out just as I was getting into the swing of things for NaNoWriMo this year. It took this article from Tee Morris to remind me that I had been remiss in supporting my friends in their good fortune. So let me repair that now.

My friends Pip Ballantine and Tee Morris have had their first joint project, Phoenix Rising: A Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences Novel, land on the official ballot of the 2011 Goodreads Choice Awards in the Best Science Fiction category! And they are in among fierce competition, with names like Sharon Lee and Steve Miller, Stephen King, John Scalzi, and China Mieville also in the running. Phoenix Rising also happens to be the only Steampunk work in this category. Tee and Pip are my friends, but they have also written a really spectacular book (as you can see from my review here). If you have a Goodreads account, you should vote! And if you choose to vote for Phoenix Rising, I’m sure that would make Tee and Pip happy.

Still in the process of getting ready for NaNoWriMo next Tuesday. I know what I’m writing. I pretty much know my characters, at least the main ones. But it occurs to me that I’ve never actually written up a synopsis for my story. Sooooo… here is a first attempt at the synopsis. Let me know what you think.

Guest post at http://www.TheSecretLair.com

by Doc Coleman October 11, 2011 Asides

Chris Miller, one of the founders of Podiobooks.com, came to me in late August and asked if I would be willing to read a book and write a review for The Secret Lair, his online magazine dedicated to the plight of the grown up geek trying to survive in this modern world long enough to achieve world domination. Because I’m a nice guy, and it represented an opportunity to reach out to new readers and listeners, I agreed. Chris sent me an e-copy of Gary McMahon’s “Dead Bad Things”. I’m not really a fan of horror, but I gave the book a read, and my review went live yesterday over at The Secret Lair. Please check it out, and take a peek at some of the other things that Chris and his partners in crime have to say about the state of geekdom.

Today my guest post at ChocolateScotch.com went live. This is part of the Creativity series, where different creatives from around the net have been asked to present their ideas on Art, Creativity, and Inspiration. This has been a really interesting and varied series. My article is post number 54, so there are a LOT of folks chiming in on this. You can find my essay over on the Chocolate Scotch site, and while you’re there, take some time out and read some of the other articles!

It is a really excellent series, and I’m proud to be a part of it.

Phoenix Rising: A Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences Novel is the first novel from Pip Ballantine and Tee Morris writing together. They take us back to the age of Queen Victoria, and give us a view of a secret organization in Her Majesty’s government. This clandestine organization, the Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences, deals with the strange, the bizarre, and those things best not talked about in polite society. Agents of the Ministry travel the world investigating these strange and unusual events, and returning dangerous artifacts to Mother England where they can be safely stored away from dangerous hands.

Update to A Midsummer Night’s Dreaming…

by Doc Coleman April 9, 2011 A Midsummer Night's Dream

Have you subscribed to Flying Island Press’ Pirates Cove latest audio production, Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. No? Well why not? all you have to do is go to your favorite RSS catcher and enter the URL http://feeds.feedburner.com/MidSummerNightsDream. They’ve just released Act 2 Scene 1, and this is where it gets interesting, as mortal intrigues get mixed up with the power struggles of the fairy kingdom. Can Titania unravel the plottings of Oberon? Will Lysander and Hermia’s love win out? Will Demetrius steal Hermia away, or will Helena turn his false love for her to true? And how is Puck mixed up in all this? And what of the players and their play?
