Rants

There is a big kerfuffle going on in writer’s circles. Actually, it isn’t so much going on as it is going on and on and on… It is one of those arguments that won’t seem to die. This is what usually happens when people are arguing back and forth between two choices that aren’t right for the question. It is like asking what should we have for breakfast and arguing back and forth between tennis shoes and a feeling of vague disappointment. Neither one answers the question, and they aren’t really opposing choices in their own right. But people will continue to argue, and will deny the fact that the question itself may not be the right question. This case is no exception.

b48_bannerSo, a number of thing happened Memorial Day weekend. First off there was Balticon. This was full of fun and cool things and great friends, and regrettably, this is not what this post is about. We’ll come back to Balticon in another post. The second and third things that happened Memorial Day weekend weren’t cool at all, but they triggered the fourth thing, which is proving to be increasingly cool by pointing out things that are not cool. Not following along? Let me explain…

The world of publishing is changing, and a lot of the old measures of success are going away. Oh, those measures are still there, but more and more authors are finding new ways to be successful in different ways. Still, there is some draw to some of the old landmarks: getting an agent, signing a deal with a large publisher, seeing your book in bookstores. And yet, having your book in bookstores may not be the road to success most people think it is. You see, they aren’t what you think they are. The fact is, bookstores are not in the business of selling books.

Some of the details in this week’s account may be a little bit of medical TMI. I don’t go into details, but it may still be disturbing for some. This is going to be a bit long, and rambly, and a lot of me talking about things that I doubt most people are interested in, but I need to get it off my chest. So I won’t blame folks if they want to skip it. My writing has been crawling along, but mostly in putting together this account. So, this is what my week has been like…

Wednesday

The theme for this week started off early. Wednesday morning when I got up, I noticed that one of our cats, Thunder, wasn’t in his usual conspicuous spot on top of my legs. In fact, he didn’t appear to be in the bedroom at all. This wasn’t a great concern, because from time to time he will spend a night sleeping downstairs somewhere. I got dressed, and headed downstairs. Sure enough, he was sprawled comfortably on the floor downstairs. That was pretty much where the normal behavior stopped.

Normally, I’m a pretty apolitical person. I don’t usually go in for much political commentary, so you must realize that things have pretty much gone pretty far if I feel like there is a need to speak up. I’ll try to keep it short, but I understand if there are a lot of folks who just don’t want to hear it at this point. For that reason, I’m putting the rest of this post behind the cut.
