Winter weather has had its way with me of late. Dealing with the dayjob and shoveling out from under waves of snowstorms have given me relatively little time to give attention to the blog. Today I’m home sick from work, so it occurred to me that I should finally spend a few lucid minutes working on a blog post for tomorrow and #WriterWednesday. So, if it wanders a bit, take pity on me. I’m sick.

One thing that did happen that I wanted to share: I will be a guest at RavenCon again this year! OK, that is kinda obvious from the title of this post, but hey, it is still news.

For anyone who isn’t familiar with RavenCon, it is a literary based science fiction convention in Richmond, Virginia. This year RavenCon will be having its 10th convention on April 24th through 26th. For the 10th anniversary, it is a big one, and it is going to be a busy one. Here is where you can find me.

Friday:

7 pm – Opening Ceremony

Rooms E & F

Not the first panel of the con, but the opening ceremonies will be my first event of RavenCon

10 pm – 50 shades of… Bad

Chesterfield

A 101 style introduction to kink, BDSM, and the meaning of life. Well maybe not the last one. Come learn about what all the letters stand for and talk about what 50 Shades of Grey got right and what is just plain wrong. You must be 18 years or older to attend this panel. Moderator: Podcasting’s Rich Sigfrit. Panelists: KT Pinto, Jennifer Tolley, Doc Coleman

11 pm – How you do that thing you do

Chesterfield

Now that you know what BDSM is (the good and the bad), how do you do it? Not to mention, what do you even do? Where do you do it? How do you meet people that do it? SO MANY QUESTIONS! You must be 18 years or older to attend this panel. Moderator: Podcasting’s Rich Sigfrit. Panelists: KT Pinto, Jennifer Tolley, Doc Coleman

Saturday:

9 am – Twelve’s Debut: A look at Peter Capaldi’s first season as the Doctor

Room F

A look at Peter Capaldi’s first season as the Doctor, his interpretation of the character, Clara and Danny, Missy and the rest—Which episodes did you love or hate, how well did Capaldi make the role his own, where do you think we’ll go from here? Speaker: Gail Z. Martin, Panelists: Doc Coleman, Jennifer R. Povey, Devo Spice

10 am – Becoming a Voice Actor

Room G

Do you find yourself doing a number of different character voices? Do you find yourself falling into these same characters and wanting to develop them? Do you like to tackle a challenge of something new that could lead to maybe a new career or just a hobby? Come out and find out what it takes to be a voice actor. Speaker: E. L. Fortner, Panelists: Doc Coleman, et al.

Noon – You Did (Not) Attend this Panel in an Alternative Universe

Anna

Many SF novels explore the idea of alternate universes, some very similar to our own, some very different.  Some views of alternate universes suggest that every choice we make in this universe (or, for that matter, every time a quantum probability wave resolves), the other choice is made in a parallel universe, branching out infinitely.  What are your favorite parallel universe stories or ideas?  What does the possibility that another you could be making an opposite choice do to the concept of morality? Speaker: David Walton, Panelists: Jim Beall, Doc Coleman, Stephen J. Simmons

7 pm – Weird Westerns

York

What is it about the West that draws upon speculative fiction writers? Firefly, The Dark Tower, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, and The Wild Wild West, film, television, anime and commercial fiction use the west as a setting and place for magic to happen. Why do we love this sub-genre? Where is it going next? Moderator: Nicole Givens Kurtz, Panelists: Jean Marie Ward, Danielle Ackley-McPhail, Doc Coleman, R.S. Belcher

Sunday

Noon – Matt Smith: From Bow Ties to Fez: a Retrospective

Room F

Matt Smith’s time as The Doctor has ended. Join us as we discuss his time in the TARDIS. What were your favorite and least favorite episodes, supporting characters, themes and hats? We will also discuss the long-term effects of Matt’s tenure and the growth in popularity of the show during his time. Let’s review the Eleventh Doctor’s tenure and discuss the good, the bad and the ugly. Moderator: Angela Pritchett, Panelists: Saucy, Travis I. Sivart, Doc Coleman

2 pm – Stupid Superhero Powers

York

The title says it all. Moderator: Butch Allen, Panelists: Jennifer R. Povey, D. Alexander Ward, Doc Coleman.

Hope to see you there. I’ve heard the hotel has sold out already, and they’re looking for an annex hotel.
